The United Nations (UN) has called for $5.6 billion in donations to fight a famine that threatens over 20 million people in Nigeria, South Sudan, Somalia, and Yemen. While the UN’s efforts might bring temporary relief, the root causes of this famine must be addressed to prevent similar crises in the future.

Poor Countries Need Market Access, Not “Assistance”

Providing aid and assistance while maintaining tariffs is counterproductive. Pretending free trade and international economic development are separate issues facilitates a self-serving narrative that allows Americans to feel good about themselves while maintaining exploitative and self-defeating policies toward poor countries.
